my neighbor the... entrepreneur?

is multi-level marketing business. ...that is the question. it doesn't involve salaried positions or the opportunity for benefits. it does provide more earning potential if you put in more effort to grow your network of buyers and down line resellers. but is it a business? hmm.

before judging a participant in a multi-level marketing company, it is important to step back and reapproach--this time while wearing their shoes.

work from home. check.

work any hours you want. check.

work any where you want. check.

work for any amount you want. yep, that's another check.

you can see why someone might be enticed by this system, I imagine. it doesn't sound too bad to me. we have all, without a doubt, been touched by multi-level marketing at some point in our lives. whether that interaction has come from a neighbor, a friend, a coworker, a relative, or any combination thereof matters not. maybe even we, individually, have been involved with multi-level marketing.

by the very existential nature of multi-level marketing, improving the scale of sale lies in generating business via referrals and word of mouth exchanges. this truth necessitates that members of multi-level marketing companies do one simple thing: talk about it.

this means that multi-level marketing creates a lot of buzz. for an outsider, this likely invokes one of two reactions: 1. interest in “what all this is about, then?” or 2. annoyance... “do you have to keep doing that around me.” this dichotomy is actually, believe it or not, good for multi-level marketing plans. people who are interested will be very interested and will hear all about it, whereas the doubters and annoyed individuals would never be interested in the products and opportunities provided by multi-level marketing.

perhaps the outcome of everyone having a palantir into the world of multi-level marketing means that we have been exposed to as many failures as we have triumphs.

I have a word for us all to think about: pity. when we see someone failing, we pity them. especially when that failure comes with such a public tag attached as a multi-level marketing network.

I have another word for us all to think about. that word is jealousy. yes, when we see someone experiencing great success we get jealous of what they achieved, whether it came from hard work, dumb luck, or some amalgamation of the two.

these are very human reactions, pity and jealousy. there is no reason to apologize for having them. instead, we should think about harnessing them into something greater. ..maybe channel them into creating better, smarter business.

disclaimer: if your neighbor or a loved one seems to be involved in a dangerous pyramid scheme (and not a legal multi-level marketing company) it is important to sit down with the individual and calmly discuss this with them. contacting both the better business bureau and the federal trade commission is a recommended course of action.

part i: the multiple levels of multi-level marketing

the multiple levels of multi-level marketing

merriam-webster does not have a dictionary entry for multi-level marketing. a revealing truth, as it tells us that multi-level marketing 1. as a term does not garner the focus it deserves and 2. is a difficult concept to define. we will do our best over this miniseries trilogy to settle both of these issues. at the very least, we will resolve the former.

level one: also known as (aka)

multi-level marketing is known by many names. some might say this is a worrying sign, but I would point to something else known by many names, a grandmother. also known as grandma, mother, mom, daughter, [her name], [her nickname], mrs. [surname], miss. [maiden name], her, she, maybe sister (or sis), maybe even doctor, and many others. I think my point is clear: a grandmother is not reprehensible even whilst known by many names--let’s reserve judgement until we have looked at all the details. I digress. multi-level marketing is known by many names including: multilevel marketing, pyramid selling, network marketing, referral marketing. it is important to familiarize yourself with these terms and understand their origins before any further discussion of multi-level marketing.

multi-level marketing: the most common and recognizable nomenclature of the term, stemming from the structure and logistics attached to the practical operational structure that comes with this model of business.

multilevel marketing: alternate spelling notably lacking the hyphen. used interchangeably with its other hyphenated form (as detailed previously); features prominently across various web-based and physical mediums.

pyramid selling: similar to a mean, derogatory nickname a bully would give out. meant as a demeaning term connecting multi-level marketing to the infamous “pyramid scheme” (perhaps with good reason? more on that in the coming days)

network marketing: originates from the logistics connected to buying and selling present in multi-level marketing. the moving of products is based on the network one builds and interactions within said network; highlights interpersonal, webbing nature.

referral marketing: alternate take on network marketing, with a greater focus on single sellers and the dynamic association with their down line distributors.

level two: money matters

when you operate as a member of a business utilizing multi-level marketing, how do you get paid? out of fear of over-generalizing, I must note that each company has a different way of handling compensation. that being said, we can look at a few of the more common realities of compensation being implemented in multi-level marketing practices. therefore, compensation plans typically focus on two revenue streams: commissions on direct retail and commissions on down line retail. quite simply, direct retail commission is made from the sale of any product to the general public (anyone who is not in your down line) and down line retail commission is earned from any product sold by members of your down line. alternatively, while not a direct monetary payment like the previous two examples, performance-based incentives can also be implemented by multi-level marketing companies. these include exclusive conference opportunities in hot (attractive) vacation locales.

the amount one can earn as a member of a multi-level marketing company is entirely determined by the scale of retail commission a seller can bring about, and, as one can imagine, this is greatly influenced by the size and dynamism of the network that a member can create.

level three: logistics

here are two important terms to focus on: down line, up line. I may have used these too casually above and should outline what they entail. the down line, as you may have gathered from how it is used above, is everyone who sells products with you as an up line. the up line is everyone above you whose network you sell for as a down line member. kapeesh? the interplay between these directional forces, combined with the quantity of retail moved (the scale of sale, if you will) in the "general public" creates a vast network of movement and countermovement. without a strong logistical approach, the threads on this web are at risk of underperforming; that is to say, collapse. it is a difficult balance to say the least, which is why many struggle in this field of operations (and within this business model in general).

level four (and more): a quick look at regulations

as pointed out by the federal trade commission, it is important to recognize this fact:

not all multilevel marketing plans are legitimate. if the money you make is based on your sales to the public, it may be a legitimate multilevel marketing plan. if the money you make is based on the number of people you recruit and your sales to them, it’s probably not. it could be a pyramid scheme. pyramid schemes are illegal, and the vast majority of participants lose money...one sign of a pyramid scheme is if distributors sell more product to other distributors than to the public — or if they make more money from recruiting than they do from selling.

having said that, there are also many multi-level marketing plans that are legitimate. it's just about knowing where, and how, to approach it. carefully, might I recommend.

wage gap vs age gap

the only difference between these two phrases is a single letter: w. I think you will agree they are very similar. not only do the two share a majority of letters, they also trend together. simply put, old people make more money than babies--an easy enough concept to understand. as you get older, you make more money than younger people. I hope to make more money now that I'm older...and I will because the age gap is growing.

6 reasons I am totally addicted to online shopping

alright, I admit it. I'm addicted to online shopping.

1. you can do it from anywhere.

the couch, the bed, the bathroom, grandma's house, outside, another country, inside a physical, tangible store... the list goes on!

2. you can do it on anything.

your smartphone, your laptop, your tablet, your desktop computer, your fridge! ok, maybe that's not anything, but it's still a pretty crazy list!

3. anticipation.

has it shipped yet? when will it get here? today!? tomorrow!?! I cannot wait to open it!

4. the absolute mystery.

there is one person on the planet who definitely knows what is in that box, and one person who is about to find out.

5. every box that's opened by someone was also packaged by someone.

each parcel becomes an inside joke between you and the person who packed it. no doubt one of the most intimate interactions you can have with a person, having both touched the contents of the box.

6. supporting the boys in blue.

how do you think packages get from point a to point b? when there's a friendly knock at the door, it always brings a smile to my face.

we had some complaints recently about the ease of use of the comprehensive jumjax™ database. we listened, we heard you, and we made some important changes. I think everyone will find this new database easier to explore, but it also provides a few other benefits: easier to edit, easier to collaborate, easier to format, easier to maintain. one of these items in particular made me give the green light to this overhaul: easier to collaborate. we are happy to announce that the database is now housed in a google sheet (google's version of an excel document, in layman's terms).

bitcoin breakout

everyone is talking about it. everyone is asking me about it. ok, I'll address it.

"oh wow, bitcoin rose $1,000 in an hour." yes, after a long period of bitcoin settling in the 6.5k-7k range, bitcoin smashed up the charts to 7.8k. big whoop. it'll dance in the 4k range before too long. it'll dance in the 14k range. I've been known to dance myself!

always the enamored analysts these days, "bitcoin this" and "bitcoin that." "don't forget about bitcoin, everyone." "bitcoin is still here, look at how it can make you so much money." you know who won't forget about bitcoin? east coast hipsters. these young guns think they have it all figured out. "it's the future of banking. it's banking without banks." they introduce themselves to people as statisticians. it's embarrassing. I'm tired of talking about bitcoin when these are the people talking about bitcoin. amateur hour, hello. I'm tired of hearing about bitcoin. you know what happens next after a boom like this? after these ramblers spend their time talking about bitcoin? a bunch of simple dads go out and mortgage their houses and buy up as much bitcoin as they can. spoiler: they lose. big. spoiler: the pressure collapses their family. divorce. the house they had no business buying in the first place is re-possessed by the bank (who are not without fault, I might add). the kids are ripped out of school and away from their friends to go live with their aunt. the dads, knowing they are the ultimate failures, throw themselves off of condemned office buildings. I'll say this about bitcoin: snake oil.

bitcoin breakout. hah. more like if you're in bitcoin, break out of that. instead of investing in 1s and 0s maybe invest in the currency of the past, present, and future. people.

thinking about the zine idea again

I was thinking more about the zine idea I mentioned a few days ago. I was thinking about how much I like it, but I was also thinking about logistics.

ah yes, logistics. a very important word, but a more important concept.

primarily, it's about networking. it's about the shortest distance between twenty points... but it's also about whether those twenty points need to be connected. each of those twenty points, mind you, is a person, and it needs to be considered as such. a human network.

the truth is this: it will be easier to orchestrate the initial delivery of this publication by distributing it as a digital zine, and then upgrading it to a physical zine in the future. it pains me to not provide important business to the post office (the boys in blue have provided so much for us), but knowing that it will help avoid any hiccups on initial launch settles my qualms about it. for a novice of the print-media industry like myself, having the freedom to experiment within the medium and get a feel for the amount of time and effort it takes to put together an issue is a huge benefit.

so, without further ado, it is our pleasure to announce frank's new blog's digital zine: volume 1. it brings us joy to report that the first two issues are already in development and will be released on june 5th, 2018 and decemeber 5th, 2018--our sixth month anniversary and one year anniversary, respectively, so mark your calendars!

I know a ".pdf" file doesn't provide the same joy to it's users as flipping through a set of physical pages, but without a deep understanding of the logistics behind an undertaking of this magnitude (to a global readership, might I add), we at frank's new blog think it's important to start small and build up, just like how we initially started this blog--with a single post! and look how far we've come... remember, small business is big business.

batteries are in everything. cell phones, laptops, alarm clocks, calculators, cars, trucks, vans, buses, cameras, flashlights, wireless mice, wireless keyboards, wireless remotes, wireless microphones, wireless controllers. the list could go on (it does). in our modern world, we use them every day, but we don't often think about how lucky we are to have these little power cells working around the clock--and in the clock, ha ha--for us. the future of power is in batteries, and mark my words, investing in that market is a good idea, especially as more alternative energy sources are explored. my 25 year prediction? your house powered by a battery. my 50 year prediction? extra big batteries that power entire grids.

frank's new blog is happy to announce the publishing of a new page--accessible via the navigation bar to the right if viewing on desktop or, if on mobile, via the drop down page selection banner near the top of the page (which is probably currently displaying "home" in white text on a maroon background)--the comprehensive guide to the use of jumping jacks in film and television is finally live. yes, our dream of creating a definitive jumjax™ database has turned into reality.

keep in mind, as we outline on the page, this is a living database that will be constantly updated! currently, there are many titles yet to be represented, but it is our goal for the future that someone will be able to use this definitive guide as part of a research project or thesis project, as well as just for fun. you don't need me to tell you anything more, see it for yourself.

dumbest thing I've ever heard

just found out that the time I spend on frank's new blog doesn't count towards my mandatory 100 community service hours. um, excuse me...what? this is an outrage. this is unbelievable. none of my previous hours up to this point have counted....

breathe in...and....breathe out...

this is an incredible oversight by the local government in my opinion. this blog is a better community than anything they have ever participated in, that's a guarantee.

on the plus side, my eyes have been opened to how badly the legal system of this country needs to be reformed. I've also come up with a few "acceptable" ways to serve my "community service" hours. spoiler: I think you are going to enjoy them. I know I will.

I'll leave you with something I've come to embrace:

imagine this: a frank's new blog zine (that's hip lingo for magazine). it takes everything you love about frank's new blog and puts it in the palms of your hand, making it that much more intimate. physically flip through the pages to read business insights, some of the classic humor you've come to know and love, and maybe even special features from loyal readers. I'm imagining a biannual mailing schedule, one in june, one in december (on the half-year and year anniversaries of frank's new blog). these are just some ideas I'm having.

some reasons this is a good idea:

• it supports the postal service
• it builds community
• it is cool

in the tech industry they would say this idea is still in beta! (that means it's still in the early stages of its development.)

I like where this could go, and I know you will, too. keep up the good work.

not long now

we're just 2 months away from our six month anniversary here at frank's new blog. remember back in 2017 when we saved blogging? that was good. in two months that will have been six months ago. that's half a year. that's a long time to be doing something, half a year. not in the grand scheme of things though. half a year isn't much time at all. listen here: if you took the entirety of existence--that's estimated at 4.5 billion years--and you stretch that so that it would take place over a single 24-hour day, humans would only appear in the last minute and a quarter. that's all we get. swords, the internet, cars, cavemen. all of it. imagine only half a year in that scenario. a mere fraction of a fraction of a second. so infinitesimally small...

in two months it will be six months, and that's a big deal, but don't let it get to your head.

"april showers bring may flowers." you've heard this. you know this expression. it's one of those things people say. the message is clear enough... it may be dark and gloomy now--it may be raining cats and dogs--but if you can make it through this rain, you'll enjoy the beautiful flowers that will grow with the nourishment it provides them. it's a message of hope for the future. it's a message about appreciating that things don't just happen without some other influence. it's about recognizing the actions and reactions ever present in our lives and in the stock market.
