the last cool thing, cool thing 13, had a very exciting bit of engagement in the comment section as loyal readers attempted to solve frank's new blog official word search #1. this got me thinking back to the wikipedia 6-clicks game we played a number of weeks ago, which in turn got me thinking about a fun new idea: cool thing bonus points.

permission granted

many of you will remember that the month of march was a difficult one for me personally, but I think we can all agree that frank's new blog emerged from the legal trial and tribulations stronger than ever before. I wanted to share with you some more personal news, that being: 

1. to start off, the courts have granted the deadline extension I requested on the community service hours requirement after they informed me that the time I spend here--serving the frank's new blog community--does not count towards my 100 community service hours "punishment" as I initially assumed. (still don't really understand why it doesn't, to be perfectly honest...)
2. next, the courts have granted my request that the creation of a new public service announcement video series would fulfill my community service requirement (assuming the time spent creating said series meets or exceeds the 100 hour sentence).

the judge seemed to think it was a great idea for how I could give back and also show I had learned from my mistake, and I also think the same. he actually said, "what a creative way to serve a sentence." (I'm a renaissance man!) long story short, I've also gotten permission to post the public service announcement videos here on frank's new blog when they are finished! another cool thing to look forward to... maybe sometimes good things can come from bad things?

I was going to get angry at those who would take time to ridicule such an important service, but I did some digging and found out that the onion is a website based on satire, so I guess they get a free pass. at the very least they are keeping the usps in the minds of their readers, which is a small victory for our boys in blue. maybe laughter is the best medicine, as many have said, and I would have to agree.

however, they have targeted the usps on multiple occasions in their [satirical] material over the past 17 years, which is a little disheartening. everyone likes laughing, but it would be like laughing at bridges. make jokes about them all you want; they only make our day to day life more efficient. imagine one day you go to cross a river, but the bridge is not there. too many people made jokes about bridges. too many people did not take bridges seriously. it seemed like no one cared about the service the bridge provided. now the bridge is gone and you cannot cross the river.

an extreme example, but something to think about.

binoculars are an incredibly apt invention to be recognized for good invention spotlight 007. this handy contraption is useful for games of "I spy", sporting events, bird watching, keeping tabs on the neighborhood, adventuring, or just having a look around! if you are like me, you definitely have a few pairs lying around for whatever the occasion.

the good invention spotlight is a series here on frank's new blog with the humble mission of recognizing useful everyday inventions that people may take for granted. it begs the question: how did people ever make do without? we certainly couldn't.

my loyal readers,

another month has gone by, this one called april. I am once again very honored and humbled to offer, for the second time ever, frank's new blog's award for the loyal reader of the month. the month of april has not been as wild as march, but it was still a little wild, I think you will agree. and so, we find ourselves on the doorstep of may, celebrating april for what it was.

for their commitment, courage, and compassion--I present to you the loyal reader of the month: natalie portman!

this is the second loyal reader of the month award in as many months natalie has deservedly been awarded. natalie, we are happy your contributions can be recognized and immortalized as you have truly cemented your name in the history books of frank's new blog.

with this award, natalie will receive: a place in history on our loyal reader wall of fame as the first loyal reader to claim two loyal reader of the month awards (and the first to win them in back-to-back months!), a letter of recognition and certificate of appreciation, and another "frank face" static cling (I hope you can find another place to put it). ha ha!

area vs volume: triangles and pyramids

when people hear about multi-level marketing, many times their first thoughts jump to fears of nefarious schemes: pyramid schemes, ponzi schemes, scams. this stems in part from living in an era of history where distrust of others runs rampant. we are afraid of being duped. of being embarrassed. of something being too good to be true. doubt runs the world of business, and for those without strong business accumin this is particularly a recipe for disaster. however, I might suggest that under the right guidance success is guaranteed.

important formulas:

area of a triangle = base times height divided by two (b*h/2)
volume of a pyramid = length times width times height divided by three (l*w*h/3)

an important recognition: any three points, if you connect them, form a triangle. the space between them, the area, is the space over which these connections have influence. triangles appear in nature all around you. there are trianglar rocks, triangular leaves, triangular plants, triagular boats...at least, there are things like these that have triangular shapes hidden within them. the triangle is three points of strength.

when we talked about pyramid selling a few days ago, I mentioned that it was an unfair association between pyramid schemes and multi-level marketing. first of all, the distribution of weight in a pyramid is actually ideal. try tipping over a pyramid. pyramids are some of the strongest and oldest structures built by man. some have even been around for thousands of years.
